Wireless vending

In Japan, you can buy a cold drink and wireless internet access from the same vending machine. Drinks brand Asahi has unveiled vending machines that send out wi-fi signals with a 50m radius, and plans to roll out 10,000 machines over the next five years. (Cheers Ads)

Customised wine

Americans are discovering what Europeans have known for ages: that you can get a better tasting wine by blending different ones together.

Dcantr, a pop-up wine bar inside the Stable Café in the Mission District of San Francisco is taking a Vom Fass approach by inviting people to create their own pinot blend. Patrons measure out their selections in delicate glass test tubes and decant them into beakers, for a truly customised glass of wine. The bar offers a daily menu of simple seasonal dishes prepared by a Michelin-starred chef, as well as a changing rotation of 10 micro-region wines from around the world.

Snacky drinks

PepsiCo Chairperson and Chief Executive, Indra Nooyi, is attempting to “snackify” their drinks category with Tropolis, a new fruit-puree-in-a-pouch. Nooyi sees this merging of food and drink sub-brands as part of a larger industry trend towards combination foods, from Europe’s popular yogurt drinks to the fruit, dairy and grain smoothies PepsiCo produces under its Naked line.

Going loco for local

The main piazza in Sorrento is named after Torquato Tasso, the greatest Italian poet of the late Renaissance. Tasso is best known for his 1575 masterpiece, Jerusalem Delivered. Sadly, in the same decade, Tasso developed a persecution mania and died just days before he was due to be crowned by the Pope as the ‘king of poets’.
 
As well as being honoured right in the heart of Sorrento, his name also appears on a very local soft drink – Tassoni. This confident, distinctive bottle has no branding, no label, no nothing. You don’t get much more local and authentic than that. Are there any opportunities to go this local where you live or work?
