Food tripping

You’ve been ‘good’ all week. Soups, salads and only one sneaky chocolate. Now it’s the weekend and you’re off on a road trip. When hunger hits, you don’t have many options apart from refuelling on filthy burgers and fried chicken. But, my friends, it doesn’t have to be that way (much as we may like the excuse to indulge on the road).

Real mannequins

The Swedish store Athlens has decided to break from the status quo and start using mannequins that actually represent normal women. Size 14 is what can be called normal, with most females falling somewhere between a size 12 and 16.

WAT-AAH!

How do you encourage kids to ditch unhealthy fizzy drinks and drink more water? Rose Cameron asked herself this question and ‘Wat-aah!’ was born.

After chatting to her kids about their drink preferences, Cameron realised that bottled water just wasn’t cool. Together, Cameron and her kids developed the brand – including the name, neon colour scheme and iconic ‘yelling boy’ icon. Today, their company’s giving Coke and Pepsi a run for their money.

Fat-blocking cola

PepsiCo has unveiled a new cola which, according to their technologists, reduces the absorption of fat in the body and helps to cut cholesterol levels. (Amazing, Tim!)

The fat-blocking Pepsi Special, which will be distributed by Suntory International, will go on sale in Japan. It’s one of several unusual drinks to be introduced by Pepsi, including Pepsi White – a clear tangerine-flavoured cola, which will be launched in December.

Tiny vending

A tiny vending machine, designed to dispense healthy snacks for toddlers, has been launched by food brand Ella’s Kitchen. Standing 115 cm tall, with ‘bespoke features’ to help little hands access their own nutritious treats, the dispenser was designed with the average 1-year-old (and their parents) in mind.

Health hotel

The InterContinental Hotels Group has launched EVEN, a new brand of hotels for guests seeking a healthier stay. Each room is designed for working out, with details like a luggage rack that doubles as a sit-up bench and extra floor space for yoga. EVEN Hotels will also have large gyms and menus full of nutritional options.

A moveable feast

Fresh Moves Mobile Market have thought up a way to bring fresh produce to the parts of Chicago that lack them. Sparing the expense of the usual bricks and mortar grocery, Fresh Moves have repurposed a CTA bus into a one-aisle produce mart, carrying a mix of conventional and organic fruits and veg.

Food for good

In January, Walmart announced their initiative to provide healthier food at affordable prices. Expect a tsunami of R&D, supply chain and packaged food innovation as thousands of packaged products reformulate to Walmart’s new guidelines.
